Machiavelli

      Machiavelli said that as a ruler it is better to be feared that loved by the subjects if both cannot be attained. I would have to agree with this. I believe that this is better because as a ruler, it would be impossible to have everyone love you as a leader and support you. At some point someone would rise up against you. I do think its possible to make everyone fear you enough so that your power cannot be taken away. If everyone fears you, then the power is very unlikely to be taken away, because no one will want to take the chance of being killed for it. Of course, it is better for both to be attained but is usually not possible. So as a King, if I wanted to take total power, I would rather be feared than loved.
